Discovering that your child has failed an exam can be an upsetting time, but one mother in New York appears to have taken the news worse than most.

58-year-old Karen Shearon is reported to have told her daughter's guidance counsellor that she planned to blow up the school after learning that her daughter had failed the Regents Exam.

The Regents Exam is a five-subject test which students must pass in order to graduate high school in New York State.

After making the threat to blow up Staten Island's Susan Wagner High School, Shearon appeared before a judge.

Having been charged with misdemeanour aggravated harassment, Shearon was released without bail, but called the school 'liars'.

According to CBS New York, Shearon left the courthouse with her face covered.
