A US mother has been arrested this week, after leaving her son alone in a LEGO store for two hours.

The incident is said to have played out on Sunday evening, at the Eastview Mall.

According to local publication WHAM.com, the 10-year-old boy was left to wander alone in the LEGO store, with his mother nowhere to be found.

Store employees grew concerned for the child and, following company policy, they contacted the mall’s security. Security then reported the incident to local police, who arrived on the scene just before 6pm.

The child’s mother, Jian Fan, was located shortly after and arrested. She has since been charged with endangering the welfare of her child.

A member of security told local media that “the child did not know the whereabouts of his mother during the time period [when he was alone] and had no way of contacting her”.

A sign in the window of the store, in Pittsford, urges parents not to leave children under the age of 12 unaccompanied.

“To ensure that your children have a safe and enjoyable experience in our store, please do not leave them unattended. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult,” the full sign reads.

This concerning news comes just days after a similar report, this time from Canada.

According to local reports, an Edmonton mother was arrested and charged with ‘causing a child to be in need of intervention’, under the Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act.

The mother is said to have left her four-year-old daughter alone in her car for up to half an hour. The car was running and unlocked, in the car park of a grocery store, while the mother did her shopping.

Commenting on the shocking turn of events, an investigating police officer admitted she was horrified that incidents like these are still occurring.

“It really doesn’t matter what time of year it is, whether it’s super-hot or super-cold. You can’t leave your little ones in the car like that, unsupervised,” said Sergeant Tracy Gulinosky.

Let’s hope that these little ones are getting the care and support they need at this confusing time.
