We’re all feeling a little smug today following Met Éireann’s promising weather report, predicting temperatures of 18C to 25C over the next two days.

But before we start pulling the summer clothes down from the attack and begin lashing on the sun cream, we need to seriously think about safeguarding our home.

Dublin Fire Brigade has reminded us that, as glorious as it may be, the sun can cause serious damage – and not just to our skin, but also to our homes.

Indeed, the team took to their official Twitter account this morning to warn people about the potential fire hazards that we need to be prepared for.

Sharing a photo of ceramic curtain rail decorations, a glass mirror, and an array of aerosols, they warned: “It’s going to be another sunny day. Have you any of these in your window? Move them. Direct, strong sunlight can cause a fire or explosion.”

They went on to share a jarring piece of footage, proving just how dangerous it can be to leave these items in the direct line of sunlight.

“We’re trying to raise awareness of how the sun can cause fires…This domestic was most likely caused by this mirror,” they tweeted, sharing footage of a smashed and charred window.

Of course, the protection of our skin is just as important, and they reminded people across the country to ‘use loads of factor 50, avoid exposure to the midday sun, and stay well hydrated (H2O!).”

The weather looks set to be heavenly over the next two days, reaching highs of 25C. As ever, though, the heatwave is not expected to last, with rain reappearing in various parts of the country by Saturday morning.

We’re well used to making the best of what limited fine weather we get, so let’s just enjoy the sun while it lasts!

If you’re a new mum, and you’re going to be out and about with your little one; it’s important to be aware of how to protect him or her in the sun.

It is recommended that babies under the age of six months are kept out of the sun completely. Use a mesh to shield them from direct sunlight when outside; it’s also a good idea to fit a UV filter blind on your car window.

For tots over the age of six months, it’s safe to apply SPF – be sure to go for a high factor, to give their delicate skin the best possible protection. It should be applied at least 30 minutes before leaving the house.

Be safe, and enjoy the sun!
