15-year-old Gabi Finlayson was left embarrassed and disappointed this week after arriving at a school dance only to be told her calf- length dress which exposed her shoulders was too revealing.

Told that she must cover up her shoulders, Gabi, who had the dress specifically altered in a bid to adhere to the school's dress code, spent the rest of the dance in a coat and feels the school's attitude towards her ensemble was unfair.

Opening up about the situation, Gabi says: "I didn't want to make a big scene so I said yes. I had a coat in the car so I had to go back and get it."

Explaining her frustration about the incident, the Utah teen said: "Somehow my shoulders are sexualised. Like it's my responsibility to make sure the boys' thoughts are not unclean."

The teen's mother backs her daughter completely and believes the school's attitude may have a detrimental effect on young women.

Discussing the issue, Kristy Maxfield Kimball said: "The message that sends to girls is really troubling and damaging, and they've already got so many other damaging messages that are being sent to them."

Commenting on the incident, the Lone Peak High School principal, Rhonda Bromley said: "The dress code has been reviewed and approved by both the PTSA and the school community council. The dress code is based on the community standard."
