We’re well and truly into summer holiday season, and so it’s the perfect time to highlight the importance of swimming pool safety. This is a cause that mum Alex Morgan is lending her support to, this week.

The British mum has taken to Facebook to issue an important warning, after her daughter’s hair was sucked into an underwater filter.

Alex shared an image of six-year-old Darcey lying in a hospital bed, and another of a large clump of hair. She revealed that the incident occurred during a family holiday to Lanzarote, during the Easter holidays.

She explained that the family had been staying in the H10 Rubicon Palace, in Playa Bianca, when ‘the most horrendous incident happened’, just three days before they were due to fly home.

“Darcey was swimming under water when her hair got sucked into the filter that operates a waterfall in the swimming pool. Her hair was stuck and she was unable to get up to the surface,” recalled Alex.

Poor Darcey wound up under the water for over two minutes before, thankfully, a number of by-standers intervened to pull her out of the pool.

Alex continued: “Her hair was pulled and pulled before it was ripped. Darcey was unconscious and had to be given CPR at the poolside.

“She was taken by ambulance to Arecife Hospital where she underwent x-rays, tests and was under close observation. Her oxygen levels were low and she has lots of fluid on her right lung.”

Luckily, the family were able to take Darcey home from hospital the following day, but Alex is all too aware that the situation could have ended very differently.

Now, she has decided to share her story in the hope that it can save someone’s life’.

“Myself and Gareth don’t want any other parents/family members to go through what we experienced that day. We will never get over what happened, but if this post can raise some awareness, save someone’s life, then we will be happy,” she said.

She also revealed that she is ‘fighting this’ with the hotel in question, along with the holiday company she booked with.

It turns out that the hotel staff had failed to investigate at least four previous complaints regarding the underwater filter. Meanwhile, the holiday company apparently failed to make good on their promise to go to the resort and investigate the incident.

Let’s hope that Alex’s post will help others, and that the hotel and holiday firm management will take the necessary steps to ensure safety for all.
