I am still shaken up as I write this even though this happened last night. My son was staying over in his aunt’s apartment last night and got up in the middle of the night sleepwalking. He unlocked the front door and made it through the building and out onto the street before his aunt got to him.
I don’t blame her at all. She had the door bolted and she’s been so upset since then, blaming herself and crying. Something awful could have happened – he could have been taken by someone or run over by a car or worse.
Has anyone dealt with a sleepwalking child before? I don’t want to lock him in his room in case he needs to use the toilet during the night or gets scared or there’s a fire, but he’s obviously able to unlock front doors even though he’s asleep. Does anyone have any suggestions?
