In a new action plan being considered by Minister for Education Richard Bruton, children in disadvantaged schools are hoped to see the effects of a series of targeted measures aimed at improving results.

One of the ways they plan on implementing this is by making better use of school facilities including use during out-of-hours for extra assistance.

In recent years there has been cuts in education spending which has caused huge criticism from teachers’ groups.

With disadvantaged schools being hit the harshest, Minister Bruton says the plan to improve outcomes in these schools is a priority.

Another aspect of the minister’s plan is to encourage a new focus on teaching methods which evidence shows has caused children who struggle to improve results.

The plan also aims to look at using school facilities for other community supports and services.

All of these plans will be tested with pilot programmes and will be carefully monitored to ensure an informed decision is made.

Minister Bruton told The Irish Times:

“In few areas do we have more capacity to achieve our goal of a strong economy and a fair society than education.

“This is why I plan to make disadvantage a major theme of my ministry and why I plan in doing this to focus above all on improving outcomes for these children.”
