There is outrage this morning after news has emerged that a five year-old boy in a Cork school jabbed his finger with a used syringe needle in the playground.

The syringe, which is being reported as that used by heroin addicts, was thrown into the North Presentation primary school’s playground where it was picked up by the boy.

The needle punctured the little boy’s finger and he was brought to the Mercy Hospital for tests which could take up to eight weeks to come through.

Principal of the primary school, Kathleen Haverty, has spoken of her regret and worry at the incident: “We deeply regret what happened but this is a problem outside the school which visited the school. The school caretaker checked the yard for hazards minutes before playtime and it was clear ... We will have to take additional precautions in the future, but we don’t want the school to become a fortress.”

The school had previously reported anti-social behaviour around the area to Gardai.
