According to emerging media reports this afternoon, primary school teachers have voted in favour of industrial strike action.

The decision, which saw 97% of teachers endorsing the proposed action, comes amid a row over the ban of promotion within primary schools.

It is understood that the Irish National Teachers Union is calling for the re-instation of promoted posts which were lost over the past eight years.

While arguing that the ban has affected the career posts of its members, the INTO also insists that the ban has increased the standard teacher's workload.

Commenting on the developments, INTO general secretary Sheila Nunan told Today FM: “Fed-up is the mood. Angry is the mood. Demoralised is the mood.”

“People are particularly feeling that they have put in a lot of work during the recessionary years, taken on a lot of additional responsibility, lost a lot of pay and lost a lot of promoted posts.”

“We would like now to see a commencment of a process of getting those posts back in," she concluded.

It has been established that a directive on non-cooperation will be issued to all schools within this week.
