The main suspect in the murder of teenager Alice Gross was today found dead.

The body of 41-year-old Arnis Zalkalns was found by police close to where he was last seen in West London.

Zalkalns, from Latvia, was a previously convicted murderer.

He had served seven years in his home country for horrifically killing his wife in 1997.

He became the prime suspect in Alice's murder case when they were both spotted on CCTV just minutes apart, along the same stretch of canal bank in West London.

Police had been searching for Zalkalns for weeks to no avail.

Alice's body was found earlier this week, not far from where she was last seen. In a statement, Alice's parents said they were in shock. "Why anyone would want to hurt her is something that we are struggling to come to terms with.

Alice was a loving and much loved daughter and sister, a quirky live spark of a girl, beautiful inside and out."
