The Dublin Rape Crisis Centre has asserted that early education on the topic of consensual sex and sexual assault is essential in today's society.

Commenting on the sexualisation of young children, the centre's Head of Education is adamant that something must be done to ensure children are properly informed on the subject.

While acutely aware that education in this regard must be age-appropriate, Leonie O'Dowd fears that peer pressure and outside influences can have a negative impact on a child's understanding of consent and sexual activity.

Speaking to the Irish Independent, Leonie referenced the fact that 25% of school leavers claim to have had an unwanted sexual experience and firmly believes early education is paramount if this trend is to stop.
