A 16-year-old boy has this week been convicted of culpable homicide following the death of 16-year-old classmate Bailey Gwynne last October.

The convicted, who cannot be named for legal reasons, admitted killing Bailey during a row which took place at Cults Academy in Aberdeen, but denied the charge of murder.

According to police interviews, the defendant explained that Bailey's death was the result of an altercation over a biscuit during lunch hour at the Scottish school, telling officers that Bailey had refused him another biscuit leading him to insult Bailey's mother.

The defendant said the situation escalated when Bailey came towards him with a clenched fist, saying: "I saw he was quite angry. I pulled out the knife, opened it up and tried to scare him off ... he got in the way and it stabbed him."

Forced to explain why he has been carrying a knife, the defendant admitted he thought it would help him establish a place among his peers, saying: "I've never fitted in so I was just trying to act cool, act confident, act tough, but I wasn't."

According to Sky News, the defendant bought the knife for £40 online along with a set of knuckle dusters.
