We all know new toys can be expensive, so why not save yourself a few bob by making these fun playthings instead.

They are really simple and easy to do, and by encouraging your preschooler to get involved in the process you’ll be stimulating their creative side.

Sock puppets

There are bound to be a few odd socks floating around your home, so why not put them to good use by making sock puppets. Using buttons for eyes and ribbons for tongues, your preschooler will have hours of fun using their imagination.

Princess/prince castle

Head to your local fruit market to see if they have a spare box and build your prince or princess their very own castle. Cut out windows, add a bit of sparkle with some glitter and, if you’re feeling creative, make some turrets out of spare cardboard.

Bowling set

Fill ten empty plastic bottles with soil from the garden or even water from the tap and line them up like Ten Pin Bowling. Using a normal football as the bowling ball, spend the afternoon trying to knock down the pins.

Jigsaw puzzle

Print off a picture of your family, your preschooler’s favourite animal or a landscape and glue it to a piece of cardboard – making sure it is fully secured down. Cut it up into large jigsaw-shaped pieces and get your little one to put it back together. Print off four or five pictures and you’ll have an afternoon of fun sorted.

Music shaker

Fill up empty butter tubs, plastic bottles, tins or any other type of container with rice, beads, and even sand. Each one will make a different noise to keep your little one happy.

Race track

Sick of standing on a race track made out of Lego? Well, why not make a softer one! Gather together any spare pieces of grey fabric, draw road markings on it and let your preschooler create their very own road without any dangers of standing on something painful.
