A mother in the UK has criticised her son’s school for preventing her from taking her children on a holiday during the term - even though it’s the only time she can take a break from her cancer treatment.

Mum-of-three Louise Hamilton was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year, and had to undergo a long intensive course of chemotherapy. Her first break from treatment came in September of this year, and, obviously, Louise wanted to take her kids on a family holiday.

However, her eldest son’s school said it was not an “exceptional circumstance” and refused to authorise the trip, despite her youngest son's school not even hesitating when she put in the request.

"My eldest son's school however, Ridgewood Academy, said the holiday will not be authorised as it is not classed as an exceptional circumstance,” she told The Telegraph.

"I have gone through an operation, 15 weeks of chemotherapy and scans, but this is not 'exceptional' enough. I am absolutely livid. It makes me feel that I have to be on my death bed to get a holiday authorised."

While the trip will be noted as unauthorised in her son’s file, it is unlikely she will be fined as a Doncaster Council spokesman revealed the school have yet to take any action.

Thankfully, Louise’s cancer has gone into remission, and we wish her all the best with her recovery.
