According to emerging reports, secondary schools in the Republic will see the introduction of a new Leaving Certificate subject this September.

It is understood that approximately 40 schools will offer Politics and Society as a senior cycle subject, with the first exam taking place in the summer of 2018.

According to the Irish Examiner, in excess of 100 schools expressed interest in introducing the subject, which is one of the Department's 2016 commemorative projects, to their curriculum meaning that the subject will come on stream across all schools in two years time.

Commenting on the potential benefits of its introduction, Minister for Education, Jan O' Sullivan, asserts that she hopes it will inspire a new generation of social and political activists.
