Equipment:
  • A sprouting potato (one that has little white shoots growing out of it)
  • A shoe box
  • Scissors
  • Rocks

Method:
  • Get an adult to cut a small coin-size hole in the shorter side of the shoe box.
  • Add a handful of soil in the corner of the shoe box opposite to the hole you have cut.
  • Place the potato in the soil.
  • Add the rocks to the box to create an obstacle to the light. Pop the lid on the box and leave it somewhere with lots of light.
  • After four weeks, open the box and you will notice how the potato shoot has made it's way around and over the rocks towards the light.

How come?

Plants contain cells that are sensitive to the light and teach the plant which way to grow. A lant will always grow towards light.
