Choosing the right preschool can be tricky. Every one you consider will probably tell you that they are the best in the business, but how can you tell whether that’s true? Luckily, there are a few sure fire ways to tell whether the preschool you’re considering is a good choice.

First, consider its reputation. If parents are raving about it, it’s well known in your community, and there’s a waiting list to get in, then it’s probably a good choice! Parents are quick to tell other parents if their preschool is bad news, so if you don’t hear any bad reports, then it’s probably okay.

Look for fixed rules that make sense. You don’t want your child to attend a preschool that’s more like a boot camp, but you also want the rules that matter to be in place. Check the schools policies on behaviour, health and safety and other important issues before you go any further.

Good preschools also allow parents to drop by at any time. If they don’t, then that’s a clear red flag that there’s something unsavoury about the school you’re looking at.

A varied and interesting curriculum. Great schools are the ones where variety and creativity are the name of the game. Lots of toys, outside play, singing, painting and other activities should all be on the daily program at a good preschool.

Qualified staff, that are trained in first aid and other important skills, and who are well paid and happy, are another key to a good preschool.

The facilities themselves. The preschool may not have the newest or most modern facilities and equipment, but they need to be clean and safe. If you don’t spot any health hazards, and the facility is neat and tidy, then it should be a good sign.
