With so many awful stories emerging regarding the treatment of children in the classroom, some would consider it refreshing to know that pupils are looking out for one another.

However, this was not the attitude of one school in Florida, after a student was suspended for recording audio of a teacher taunting one of her young peers.

Brianna Cooper, a fifth-grade student at Fort Pierce Elementary School, reportedly recorded her teacher telling a fellow classmate: “Don’t let the size fool you. I will drop you.”

The teacher in question was fired after Brianna handed the recording over to school authorities, however Brianna also received a suspension because, according to Florida law, her recording was “illegal”.

Indeed, as the recording was made without the teacher’s knowledge – thus violating their expectation of privacy – Brianna broke the law.

Brianna and her family have hit back at the school’s reasoning, claiming that the teacher could not have held such an expectation of privacy in a classroom full of students.

Now, Brianna’s mum is calling for the school to withdraw her suspension and have it struck from her permanent record.
