The midterm is a great chance for kids to unwind after the stress of school and even for you to spend some quality time together as a family. Unfortunately, as most of us are aware, the break from school can be an expensive time, as we try to keep the kids happy and entertained for fear of an ‘I’m bored...’ situation.

Thankfully, even with a small budget you can get through it, at least until the kids are back in school.

Invite friends over

Inviting your kids’ friends over provides your youngster with hours of free entertainment and gives you a chance to catch up on domestic chores or any odd jobs you need to do. And typically, if you invite their friends over, then your youngster is usually asked back...

Head to the park

You can’t beat the park on a fine day; it’s free, your kids can spend the whole day there and they’ll get plenty of exercise in the process. Bring a picnic, a football and a frisbee and enjoy time together. The picnic is so they can refuel without the need to spend a fortune in the shops.

Look up free activities in the local library

The local library is great for hosting free activities during school holidays such as storytelling o author talks. Check out what’s on and plan the week.

Have a budget and stick to it

Make sure you create a budget and stick to it. It is easy to spend more than you have especially when buying sweets for the kids every day, stocking up on petrol for long journeys or doing expensive activities like going to the cinema. Set aside whatever spare money you have and keep track of what you are spending it on.

Get friends and family to help out

For parents who have to go into work it can be expensive signing your child up for classes just so there is someone to mind your youngster. Ease the financial pressure by asking family and friends to watch your child for a day or two or even a half day.
