The older your child grows the more curious they will be about parts of the body and what their function is. And while it can be a little uncomfortable discussing these matters with your son or daughter, it is important to understand the role that you play in helping your youngster understand basic life questions.

Leaving it up to their peers can often mean your little one is left with unanswered questions or even unaware of the right facts – making them even more confused.

There is no right or wrong age to start teaching or talking to your child about the parts and functions of the body, but when you do start, make sure you remember these three very important points.

1. Answer as honestly as possible

One of the most important things you can do is answer as honestly as possible. Depending on your child’s age obviously, you should talk to them about functions of certain parts – breasts for feeding for example. However, bear in mind that some of these answers may lead to questions about where babies come from, so be prepared to discuss sex and relationships. The more prepared you are the better you will be at telling them what theyvneed to know.

2. Talk about privacy

When talking about body parts, make sure you teach your child about privacy and when it is appropriate to show parts and when it’s not. Be sure to mention other people’s need for privacy and to respect their wishes.

3. Use teachable moments

Television programmes, posters, ads, and even songs are all teachable moments to help your child learn all about the parts of the body. Use these moments to talk about specific things or encourage them to ask questions about whatever is confusing them. As they get older and start to become more aware, you may notice your child singing a particular song or rhyme they heard at school to see what kind of reaction they will get from you – use these to teach them.
