You can see it coming a mile off, and even though your little one is well past the terrible twos, you are still struggling to keep tantrums at bay. Unfortunately, tantrums aren't restricted to a certain age, but are down to various triggers.

The good news is, once you are aware of the triggers, you will be able to spot them well before your youngster has a chance to start slamming doors and stomping feet.

Lack of choice
Now that your child is older, they will want to be given a lot more independence which you can offer to them by giving them a choice. For instance, when it comes to bedtime, ask which pyjamas they would like to wear, or which book they would like to read. And, before school, ask them would they like to have breakfast or get dressed first. By not ordering your child to do something, they are more likely to cooperate without any problems.

Boredom
Doing something for long periods of time, like homework or cleaning, can get boring and when your child is bored they are likely to become angry. To stop this happening, take a break every now and then. Certain jobs, whether we like them or not, need to be done, but by taking a break and having some fun you can stop tantrums happening and even make the job go a little bit quicker.

Your lack of patience
Sometimes, your lack of patience or tolerance level can impact on your child’s mood. If you are saying no to their every request with a slight tone of annoyance, your child will pick up on your mood and become frustrated at you as well If you are tired and cranky, take a breath before you answer their request.

Sudden changes
Kids like routine and will thrive off it. If there are changes in the way things will be happening at home, talk to your little one about them. Keeping them in the loop will mean they can be prepared and ready for the change. It doesn’t even need to be a big thing, for instance, by telling your child they have 15 minutes of playtime left will, hopefully, stop them spiralling out of control when it is time to pack up.
