What an incredible story.

When five-year-old Ethan Fenton was pushed to the ground by bullies in his front garden, a rescuer came from the most unlikely place – his cat.

Ethan’s mum, Sharon, was watching from inside as three much older boys approached Ethan and his little brother, Ashton, as they played out front.

When Ethan ignored the boys calls, the mum saw one of them push her little boy over and had just rushed outside when she saw the family cat, Smudge, dart from under the car and pounce on the boy’s chest.

The mum said the boys then ran off: “I think it was more shock than anything but the boy stumbled backwards, burst into tears and then ran off.”

Smudge has now been nominated for a National Cat of the Year award by the Cats Protection Society.

Sharon spoke of her love for Smudge and how she feels safer knowing he is with the boys: “I actually feel so much safer knowing Smudge is around after seeing him defend him like that.”
