Now is the time when mums all over start to think about which preschool they would like their toddler to go to in September.

And while many often go for the most convenient one there are a few things to consider before you make your final decision.

If you are thinking of schools for your little one, here are six things to think about before applying for a particular one.

1. The cost

Cost is a huge factor so make sure you check your entitlements and if there are any hidden extras that need to be paid throughout the year.

2. The teachers

Make an appointment with the management and get to know the teachers. If you have a certain teaching style in mind for your child – strict, academic or fun – it is important you introduce yourself to the teacher and understand how they manage the classroom.

3. The number of kids per teacher

If you feel like your child would benefit from smaller classes then there is no point sending them to a huge classroom. Talk to the management about class sizes and perhaps ask if there is any extra help for children who might need it.

4. How involved will you need to be

Some preschools rely on parents’ help to fundraise or step in and help during the school day to keep the school ticking over. But if you have a full- or part-time job or other children you might struggle to give them the time that they require. Although, on the other hand, you might relish being able to get involved! Talk to the school about your role and perhaps discuss a plan if still want to send your child there.

5. The school calendar

While most preschools follow the same holidays as primary schools, they may have extra days off or longer breaks throughout the year. So if you are, for instance, a working parent you will need to organise childcare for the days that the school is closed, making it a significant consideration.

6. What do other parents say

This is probably one of the most effective ways to tell if the school is suitable for you and your family. Talk to parents whose kids go there and ask them what they think of the place. Listening to someone’s personal experience will greatly benefit you when you are trying to make up your mind.
