While Christmas is indeed the season of goodwill, for many families it’s also the season of huge financial strain. Feeling that you must purchase presents for every Tom, Dick and Harry to save face and keep up appearances can often mean we're left feeling more cheated than cheerful.

So what happens when your little one comes home from school and announces that a present for their teacher should now be on your to-do list?

While many schools have banned presents for teachers, unfortunately some families are still faced with the dilemma every year. Not only do you need to take your finances into account, but you’re also conscious of how your child will be affected by your decision.

Here are just some of your choices if you are currently struggling with the issue.

Handwritten Letter
Why not have your child sit down and write a letter to their teacher thanking them for their help and explaining why they’re happy to be part of the class.

Benefit: This is something most teachers will cherish years after a child has left their class.

Homemade present
If your child is willing to spend time making something for their teacher, then make the most of this opportunity and allow your little one to get creative.

Benefit: Your child’s teacher will appreciate the effort and also see the benefit their art classes are having on your little one!

Baked goods
Your child mightn’t be the only creative one in the family so if you’re the type to whip up cakes and biscuits for family members at this time of year, why not include your child’s teacher in that list?

Benefit: Who wouldn’t find a good home for a festive fudge cake or spiced Christmas biscuits?

Coffee shop voucher
It needs only be as little as five quid, but it’s thoughtful, useful and always welcome.

Benefit: It’s bound to be appreciated by a harassed teacher dying to relax after a tough day.

Small, inexpensive or handmade gifts are more than enough to show your appreciation, so don’t tie yourself in knots! Remember, most teachers are more than happy with a content, well-behaved child in their class, so you’ve ticked that box already!
