If you have had the pleasure of carrying your little one’s schoolbag to school or even out of the way of the middle of the floor, you may have noticed the weight of it – and it can be pretty heavy. Now think of that being on your child’s back as they go to and from school or even to and from classrooms.

In fact, kids shouldn't be carrying more than 10-15% of their body weight; to protect your child’s back, follow these steps:

Multiple compartments
Go for a bag with multiple compartments such as side pockets or various sized front sections. This will mean the weight of the bag isn't concentrated in one area.

Make sure your little one packs their bag correctly
Heavy things should be at the back of the bag and lighter books and items at the front. This will mean there is less strain on the shoulders.

Use both straps
Your little one needs to use both straps, so that the weight is evenly distributed on the back. Avoid allowing them to hang their bag off just one shoulder.

Back and strap padding
When choosing a bag, go for one with padding so that it feels comfortable on your child’s back. If it sits right and feels comfy, your little one will be more inclined to keep it tight on them – this will help minimise the strain on the spine.

Waist strap
If the bag has a waist strap, use it. This can take much of the weight off the back and bring it in closer to the body.

Encourage good posture
Good posture is key to protecting the back. It is important your child stands up straight and keeps their shoulders back. If you see them leaning forward to compensate for the heavy back load, point it out.

Encourage them to decrease their load
If possible encourage your child to leave as many books in class as possible so that they aren’t forced to carry them around all the time. If their bag is exceptionally heavy, consider getting one with wheels. If possible, keep the time they have to carry it around to a minimum.

Your child’s spine and muscles are still growing and a heavy bag can cause serious problems in the future.
