Think back to Transition Year – what were you doing then, at the age of 15 or 16? If your experience was anything like ours, then it’s likely you were practicing a play or getting ready for a mini-company trade fair – a far cry from what the students in this report got up to today!

A group of 181 Transition Year students watched a live Caesarean section this morning via video link, as part of a programme created for budding doctors and medical practitioners of the future.

Each year, students from all over the country who are considering a career in medicine are chosen to take part in the Mini-Med programme. Run by the Royal College of Physicians, the programme offers students a unique insight into practices and procedures that they would otherwise have to wait until college to witness.

This morning’s procedure was performed by Prof Fergal Malone, Master of the Rotunda, with the entire process streamed via video link for the students to watch.

The new mother is reported to have given birth to a healthy baby boy, and the pair are said to be doing very well.

Audio shared with Newstalk captured the students’ gasps as the baby entered the world, followed by applause as the tiny tot was presented to them.

It certainly beats having the head stuck in the books, doesn’t it?!
