The end of preschool can be a very emotional time for a lot of mums. As you stock up on books and uniforms, your little baby can suddenly seem extremely grown up. While your youngster may seem excited about the transition, it is important you understand that they may be nervous about the big change.

To ensure your little one stay happy and excited about heading off, have a read of these five very important tips.

1. Attend as many open days as possible

It can be daunting for your son or daughter to enter a entirely new building not knowing anyone, so try to bring them to the school as often as possible. Avail of any open days and if they don’t have any do organise one with the school yourself - they're great at helping kids get used to their new surroundings. Walking or driving by the school frequently can also help them get used to what it looks like and where it is.

2. Talk to them about the school

Do spend a few minutes each day talking about what will happen at school and who will be there so that you are prepared come the big day. However, you should avoid talking about homework or the amount of work they will be given as it can be frightening for a child to hear.

3. Get them into a routine early

Your little one has probably been enjoying some late nights throughout the summer, so it is important you try to get them back into a routine gradually. From about now, start to get them to bed about ten minutes earlier increasing it by ten minutes each week until they are into a good, solid routine. This will stop them feel overly tired the first week and will mean they are better able to cope.

4. Share happy memories of school

Now is the time to recall your own happy moments from school and share them with your little one. These can be anything from playing in the yard to talking about your favourite subject.

5. Don’t make a big deal about it

The more you go on about how much of a big deal it is to be attending a whole new school the more nervous your preschooler will be. Keep the lines of communication open and gently ask them about what they are looking forward to.
