Most of us learned to swim the same patchy way: a few summers of lessons, a long break, and a vague hope that it all “stuck”. For a generation of Irish parents who grew up doggy-paddling through inconsistent classes, there’s often a quiet question that follows us to the poolside with our own children — is this actually working?
It’s a fair question. Ireland is an island nation. We holiday near water, live near rivers, and our kids are naturally drawn to pools, lakes and beaches the second the sun appears. Water safety isn’t just a nice-to-have skill — it’s a life skill, and like any life skill, it needs structure to really stick.
That’s why MummyPages recommends Aura Swim Academy’s 10-Level Learn to Swim Curriculum — a structured approach many parents are now choosing for their children, not just to learn to swim, but to build real, lasting water confidence and safety.
One of the challenges with “a few lessons here and there” is that swimming is one of the few sports where gaps in learning can really matter. A child who can splash around in the shallow end isn’t necessarily water-safe, and being “good for their age” doesn’t always mean they’ve learned how to respond if they go out of their depth, or how to recover calmly and confidently.
Water safety isn’t one skill — it’s a sequence of skills, each one building on the last. Miss a step, and the picture isn’t complete.

Ducklings to Sharks: what the 10 levels actually look like
This is exactly the gap Aura Swim Academy’s 10-level curriculum is designed to fill. Children start from age 3.5, and progress based on ability rather than age — so every level has real meaning.
Ducklings: The first step, focused on safe entry and exit from the pool, face submersion, and building early water confidence in a calm, supported way.
Turtles: Children progress to independent floating on front and back, developing balance and body awareness before introducing more structured strokes.
Seahorses: Confidence builds further with front crawl and back crawl kicking, first in the learner pool and then progressing into the main pool. At this stage, skills like treading water and swimming without aids are introduced in a supported, step-by-step way. Breathing technique and movement in deeper water are developed gradually, alongside early stroke refinement.
Flying Fish: Children work across all major strokes, including butterfly, while building technique through fun, skill-based activities like snorkelling, turns and diving.
Sharks: The highest level focuses on stamina, refinement across all four strokes, individual medley swimming, and an introduction to lifesaving skills.
Levels 1–3 take place in the learner pool, with progression to the main pool from Level 4 onwards. Children are continuously assessed, and move up only when they are confident and consistent in each skill — not based on term dates or age alone.

Why structure builds confidence
It’s easy to think of swimming as something children either “get” or don’t. But real water confidence comes from building specific skills in the right order — and practising them until they stick.
That includes learning to float, tread water, swim without aids, recover calmly, and eventually develop lifesaving awareness. These aren’t add-ons — they’re built into the learning journey from the very beginning.
If you’re unsure where your child fits, Aura Leisure offers a free swim assessment at every centre. It’s a simple way to understand their current ability and place them at the right level from the start.
Setting your child up this autumn
Autumn is a natural reset for families — routines settle, school is back in full swing, and it’s often the perfect time to take a fresh look at activities that really matter.
If your child is already swimming, it may be worth checking in on their current level and what they’re working towards next.
If they’re just starting out, the free assessment means there’s no guesswork — just a clear, supportive starting point.
Aura Swim Academy’s 10-level pathway takes children from their first splash to confident, capable swimmers, with water safety woven through every stage. And because progression is based on ability rather than the school calendar, children can move at a pace that genuinely suits them.
Contact your local Aura Leisure today to book a free swim assessment and secure your child’s place this autumn.
