Whether your little one has finally learnt to ride their bike for the first time or is still on their training wheels, you need to properly ensure that your tot is safe for the many bike trips ahead:

Headgear
Before your tot even thinks about sitting down on that saddle, they need to have the perfect fitting headgear. The best way to find out whether your tot’s helmet is the right fit is through the eye, ear and mouth rule. When it comes to the eye rule, you should be able to place two fingers between the rim of the helmet and your child's eyebrows. With the ear rule you should be able to form a "Y" underneath your child's ears and for the mouth rule your tot’s should still be able to comfortably open their mouth after their helmet fitting.

Right clothes
You’ll be surprised by how many bike accidents are caused by clothes getting caught in a bike chain or shoe laces being wrapped around your tot’s pedals. So it’s essential that your toddler is wearing the proper attire when it comes to cycling. Your child should stay away from skirts, loose pants and stick to fitted trousers. As for shoes make sure those laces are tied tight and that your tot doesn’t cycle in sandals, cleats or bare feet as they won’t be able to control their movement.

Rules of the road
If your child is ready to venture out on the main road, it’s essential that you go over all the possible dangers that could occur. It’s always a good idea to go cycling with your child on their first road trip, so you can feel assured on your tot’s safety as well as giving them some guidance.

Aware of surroundings
Whether they’re cycling in your backyard, housing estate or brave enough to venture the main road, your tot needs to be aware of their surroundings. It could be something as simple as puddles, rocks or random objects scattered on their bike’s path that could easily cause an accident. So make sure your child knows to pay attention and to slow down when around these areas.

Look after their bike
Bikes are bound to go through a bit of wear and tear with each ride but it’s still important that you’re tot knows how to properly look after their bike. Your child will need to tighten their seat, handlebars and wheels before they go anywhere. It is also important to make sure the seat is no more than three inches from the front bar. This will give your child better control over the bike and help protect them in the case of a crash. It’s also a good idea to oil the chain and pump air into the tires every two weeks, to ensure your child has the safest ride.
