Nowadays, we are all so worried about something bad happening to our children that we try to protect them from absolutely everything to keep them safe, particularly things that might hurt them.

And while we certainly don’t mean allow your child play with fire, run with a scissor or cross the road without looking, activities like climbing trees, using a child-friendly scissor, jumping from a high ledge, cycling with no hands, cutting up vegetables or using things not-as-designed (like climbing up the slide the wrong way) can benefit them later in life.

The possibility of your child hurting themselves while doing a so-called dangerous activity is always going to be there, but by allowing your child partake in activities that you might perceive as dangerous they will learn valuable life lessons.

Learn about consequences

All actions have consequences whether it affects your child or others around them, but your little one will never be able to understand this unless they are allowed to do certain things that might hurt them.

Learn coordination and balance

How will they ever learn to be able to balance or use their coordination if they aren’t given the opportunity? For instance, they are going to fall off their bike the first time they try to cycle with no hands, but the more times they practice it the better your little one will become at balancing and using their coordination.

Teaches them to be careful

While you might feel like you are protecting your youngster by not letting them jump from one couch to another for instance, in fact, they will learn to be careful if they are allowed to fall and make a mistake because they will know where they went wrong in the first place.

To take risks

Life requires us all to take a certain amount of risks and while some won’t pan out as we would like others will. You want your child to be confident in their ability to do things that might scare them or to be able to try new things.
