There is nothing worse than having to close your son or daughter’s bedroom door just so you don’t have to look at the mess. But, unfortunately, when it comes to decorating, your child's room can often get left out and becomes more about storing toys and sleeping, than being a place for creativity and fun.

Here are 9 ways you can make your big kid’s room a lot more cosy.

Rugs
Rugs are a great way to add warmth and cosiness to a room. They also make it more comfortable if your child is playing with their toys or reading on the ground.

Lights
Having a bedside light enables you to switch off the main light when it comes to story time. A night light is also a great way to give your child comfort if they aren’t fond of the dark. Fairy lights are a must for any little girl's room.

Bunting
Bunting is really cheap to pick up and really adds life and colour to your child’s room. If your kids are sharing a room, two different banners with their favourite colours over theri bed will help them make their side more personal.

A clock
A clock in a bedroom is not just handy for getting your kids up in the morning, it can help them if they are learning to tell the time in school.

Lots of teddies
Your kids are bound to have lots and lots of teddies so, rather than just pile them up in a corner, place them around the room so that they become part for the decorating rather than just a big mess in the corner.

An inspirational quote
Either one you say to your child every day or a store bought one. No matter where you get it, make sure it inspires them to be who they want to be.

Something sentimental
Give your child a toy or blanket with a story to help show the importance of holding on to things that aren’t a trend. A toy that belonged to you when you were a baby or a blanket that your great-grandmother made all have a story behind them that you can share with your youngster.

Lots of colour
Remember, you are decorating a child’s room so make sure you include lots of colour: on the walls, along the shelves, rugs, carpets blankets, pillows and storage areas. It’s a child’s room so make sure it looks like a child’s room.

Let them help
Make sure you include your big kid when it comes to decorating their room. It is the only room in the house that they own so they should have some say in how it is decorated.
