Is my child's speech development on track and how can I help to keep it that way?

Most 15 month olds have added quite a few words to their vocabulary of just a few months ago. Along with mama, dada and one or two other words, he or she has probably learned at least three others, and is starting to listen to, and understand, questions and instructions given in short sentences.

The best ways to encourage this linguistic progress is to make sure you spend a lot of time listening. Chances are your toddler is trying very hard to communicate with you now, and getting down to his or her level, and making eye contact, while he or she talks is a great form of encouragement.

If your child seems a little slow or reluctant to learn to speak, then time spent reading is a great way to encourage progress. Get hold of age appropriate books, and spend time together, reading stories and pointing out animals, people, or other objects in those books.

Don’t worry if your child doesn’t get a word right – praise your child anyway, and simply correct the mistake by repeating the word back to him or her. Over time, those mistakes should correct themselves.
