After the expense of December, January is definitely the month of looking for any loose change down the side of the couch. And while it can be a bit of a struggle, it doesn’t mean you need to spend the entire four weeks listening to your bored kids fighting with each other or moaning that they have nothing to do.
To help you out, here are ten fun and inexpensive things that you can do with the kids this January.
Head to a museum
Most museums are free to visit and many have lots of events for families and kids that don’t cost a thing. Bring a packed lunch and the most you’ll have to spend is your bus or car parking ticket in and out.
Go for a walk up the mountains
Put on your hiking boots and get out and about in the fresh air. You will need to head out early enough in the morning as it gets dark fairly quickly, but you will all feel the better for it.
Have a movie night
Pick two movies that everyone in the family will like, buy a few goodies and spend the cold, wet afternoons cuddling on the couch.
Do art and crafts
Be creative and have an arts and crafts day. Use whatever you can find in the house, scraps of old Christmas wrapping paper will definitely come in useful now.
Learn a new game
Get out a game of chess and spend the afternoon teaching your kids how to play. Not only will you be spending quality time together but they’ll also be learning something new.
Go on an adventure
Wrap up warm, put a picnic together and buy a family train ticket and go on an adventure to somewhere you have never been before.
Make paper boats
Spend a couple of hours making paper boats before heading down to the park and having a boat race with them in the pond.
Perform a play
Have your kids write a play which they can then perform for the rest of the family.
Build a fort
Kids love nothing more than building forts, so grab all your old blankets, chairs, pillows and boxes and get started.
Make a kite
Make kites out of old newspaper, plastic bags and sticks and head to the park on a clear, blustery day to fly them.
