Birthday parties should be all about having fun and playing games, and the planning shouldn’t leave you feeling frustrated or stressed out.

Many of us are now shunning the venue based birthday parties in favour of a good old-fashioned bash at home. Yes, having 30 children in your home is not for the faint-hearted but with the right children's entertainer, it will all be a bit of fun. Some of my fondest memories are having a special day at home with my pals and after all, it is only once a year!

To give you a helping hand, here are five themes and parties that you can host for your little one and that they are sure to love.

1. Hello Kitty

Rather than going overboard hanging giant posters of Hello Kitty all over the walls, simply use the colour scheme and have a few small pink and white balloons around the house. You can serve Hello Kitty shaped biscuits, pink lemonade, strawberries and marshmallows to stick with the pink and red Hello Kitty colour and keep your guests entertained by playing traditional party games.

2. Movie Marathon

For an older child, a movie marathon might be the way to go. This is a great idea if you only have a small amount of space or want to keep the cost to a minimum. Seeing as it’s a party why not order in pizza or cook your own in the oven. Serve crisps and fizzy drink and have at least three movies ready to watch. Make the living room like a cinema by closing the curtains, dimming the lights and have kids sit on cushions on the floor.

3. Zoo party

This is a really good idea if your little one is a fan of animals. Decorate the house with signs that you might find in the zoo, and have each room be the home for different types of animals. Use your child’s teddies and have all your guests dress up as their favourite zoo animal.

4. Superhero Party

Have a face painting section, a mask designing section and a cape creating section and let the kids go wild making up their own superhero. Serve cake pops, a specially made superhero cake, pizza and sausage rolls. One of the best entertainers that we come back to time and time again is Genie Mackers - this awesome entertainer does amazing face-painting in your home (like little Eva above!) balloon animals and themed parties for girls and boys! Her team of entertainers are professional, fun-loving and most importantly, experts in crowd control!

5. Sports Party

If your little one is a sports fan why not have a sports themed party. You will need to take this party outside though and have a number of games ready to play. Have a basketball section, a football section, a running area in your garden and let the kid have fun. You will need to serve lots of water and juice to keep them hydrated and plenty of sandwiches and fruit. It also means they are out of the house which means less mess, right? RIGHT?

What do you think, mums? Is having your child's birthday party at home a good idea? What about party bags, yay or nay? We'd love to hear your thoughts!
