There is so much more to Christmas than expensive Santa visits and shopping; from walks in the park to decorating the tree, there are a whole host of things you can do with your big kid that will make the festive season truly special.

You don't need to spend a fortune or even leave your house to experience the some of the most magical festive offerings that are, sadly, quite often overlooked.

1. Walk through the city watching the twinkling lights

The city centre always looks so magical when it’s decorated with soft, twinkling lights so why not make an evening of it. You don’t have to go in to do some shopping, in fact, you’ll have a better experience if you’re not rushing around.

2. Drinking hot chocolate from a market stall on a cold evening

A cup of hot chocolate tastes so much better when you are standing in the freezing cold surrounded by Christmas lights. Skip the coffee on this trip and share a warm drink with the kids.

3. Making Christmas tree decorations from scratch

Toilet roll holders and egg cartons are useful tools when it comes to making your very own decorations. However, you can always bake something and hang it up – but don’t forget to throw it away after Christmas...

4. Eating cookie dough out of the bowl

Baking Christmas cookies is always a good idea but eating the dough from the bowl is sometimes even better!

5. Listen to a Christmas carol service

Stop and spend a few minutes watching and listening to the carol singers that you pass by on the street – the will definitely get you in the mood for Christmas.

6. Watching a festive movie snuggled up under a duvet

With the wind howling outside and the rain pelting against the window, the best way to spend an evening is snuggled up in front of the telly.

7. Eating chocolate out of an advent calendar

Popping the little door open to reveal the wonderful surprise is one of the best ways to start your day. And eating chocolate for breakfast is allowed during the festive period, right?!

8. Help your little one write their list to Santa

If your little one tends to write their list in their bedroom away from prying eyes, this year, ask them if you can be there to while they write and perhaps help to decorate it.
