Kids are just the cutest (well, mostly!) from how they suddenly come over all shy when they meet new people, to the adorable way they stick their tongues out when concentrating, to the things they say to us every day that make us go “Awhhh!”
Like these gems:
1. “I love you.”
This is the biggie. The one that counts. Even after a long stressful day – the kind where you’re fit to either collapse or eat your body weight in chocolate – your child’s arms around your neck and an “I love you” is ALL it takes to make everything worthwhile.
2. “I’m getting married!”
Once our little ones get the loosest grasp of what it means to be married, suddenly they’re promising themselves to all and sundry. Proposals are being thrown around like they’re going out of fashion to their teacher, their best friend, and even the neighbour’s labrador. And it’s adorable.
3. “Mum, how come I don’t have a…”
Curiosity about pee pees and the like comes up pretty early – and of course it’s completely natural. And while we do our best to answer them simply and directly without making big deal of it, we can’t help but think, “AWH!”
4. “I made a sandwich all by myself!”
Sure, we supervised and did all the chopping – but the pride on our kids’ faces as they chomp into their very own sambos is just the sweetest thing. It’s SO cute when our kids sing, but even cuter when they get the lyrics wrong (which is pretty much all the time). Like when they sing Frozen’s “Let It Go” as “No right, no wrong, no rules for me, tambourine!” instead of “No right, no wrong, no rules for me, I’m free!”
6. “I’m BRILLIANT!”
Kids are so confident and proud of themselves – and we love how they aren’t afraid to shout it to the rooftops. WE think they’re brilliant, so of course we want them to think it too! When we get older we become much more self-deprecating, so we revel in the natural way our kids sing their own praises.
7. “You’re my best friend.”
For a child, the term ‘best friend’ is special. It means you’re top of the heap, the bee’s knees. So when they say it to us, we melt into puddles of mush.
8. “Mum, will you love me forever?”
The trusting way our kids look into our eyes and ask us this question makes us melt. And what makes it even sweeter is that they already know the answer, they just like to ask so they can hear it again and again.
