It’s a fact that causes plenty of concern for many parents, but computer games have a big influence over children. It’s important therefore, that parents understand a few basics of why our kids are attracted to these addictive games, what they can learn from them and how to avoid the pitfalls.

Why kids love electronic games
Lightning-fast processing speed, thundering audio and mesmerising graphics are certainly part of the appeal but really they’re just an added bonus for the elemental attraction: control.  Your five to eight year old’s life centres around commands and being told what they can and can’t do and where they can and can’t go so it’s understandable that for a little part of their day they might want to do things that they can’t do in real life. Racing cars, exploring haunted houses or playing in a professional soccer match gives them a feeling of freedom.

Choosing good games
It’s vitally important that this empowerment works both ways. Choose games that are educational in some way and games that are based on the same principals of play that your child enjoys in the back garden. That’s not to say that games have to be obviously educational to be teaching something.  Sports games can teach dialogue about geography or a game set in a medieval land can provide opportunities for valuable history lessons.Choose games that play to your child’s interests. You can also choose games that you would like to your child to be exposed to. Perhaps your child struggles with maths or spelling? Why not get him a game that will help boost these skills? Computer software can introduce academics in a playful, stress-free setting. Children often find daunting subjects such as maths and science less intimidating when presented in a fun environment.

Handling violence in video games
The question, “Do violent games create violent kids?” is often asked among parents in today’s society. In recent times, there has been much debate as to whether or not violence in computer games presents a real threat. What can concerned parents do about violence in computer games? The most important thing is to be aware of what games children are playing. In particular, pay attention to reviews and ratings on games. If a game your child really wants for their birthday is rated ‘over 18’s’ then you need to be strict and explain to him why it isn’t suitable. If you have doubts about a game, why not play it yourself? It’s the best way of learning whether it’s suitable for your child or not.
