Every year, Barnardos run a survey to get an estimate of what it costs for parents to send their children to school. This year marks the eight annual school costs survey and it is now open: www.barnardos.ie/schoolcosts2013.

All parents with children of school going age are invited to fill out the survey in order to let Barnardos know their experiences of what they pay for their child’s education- from school books to clothing, footwear, photocopying fees, voluntary contributions and any other extra costs.

The survey allows parents to provide the costs for one child in primary or secondary school. The information gathered is then used by Barnardos to assess the average cost of education per child nationally and to inform Barnardos on-going campaign to reduce the cost of education.

Barnardos Head of Advocacy, Catherine Joyce said: “We know that parents are struggling more than ever to meet the high costs of sending their children to school. Year on year, families have been hit the hardest by austerity budgets and children’s education is suffering. We need parents to stand up and tell it like it is so that decision makers can see the impact their policies are having on families.”

In 2012, almost 1,000 parents participated in the Barnardos School Costs Survey and expressed frustration and anger at the continued high costs of sending children to school so this year have your say and join other parents in trying to make a change for the better.
