Cards game are a great activity for a rainy day or if you are going on a long journey. The following games are easy to explain and play, and some might even teach a thing or two like memory or hand eye coordination.

Here a number of cards games to play with your older child:

Snap

2 players

You will need a standard 52 deck of cards

How to play:

Divide the deck of cards equally between each player. Make sure nobody looks at their deck by keeping the cards stacked on top of each other face down.

Get one player to put the first card down turning it over just before it hits the surface. The next player needs to put one card from their own pile down on top of that card.

Continue to do this until two exact same cards on put on top of each other. When this happens the first player to slam their hand down over the pile of clothes and shout "Snap" wins the pile of cards.

Keep playing like this until one person has all the cards.

Memory

2 + players

You will need a standard 52 deck of cards

How to play:

Lay the cards out on a flat surface suit side down.

The players are trying to find matching suits and colours.

The first person turns one card over and then another. If they match, for example they are both hearts or spades of the same colour, then they get to keep the cards. If not then the cards must be turned back over for the next player.

Go Fish

3+ players

You will need a standard 52 deck of cards

How to play:

Five cards must be dealt to each player.

Put the remaining cards in a neat pile in the centre.

Each player needs to hold the cards facing towards them so their opponents can’t see what they have. The object of the game is to collect the most sets of fours – four nines, four kings etc.

The first player for instance asks the player to their left “have you got a nine” (this is just an example – they can only ask for a card if they have one to put it with)

If that player has any nines they must give you all of them. If not they say “Go Fish”. The first player can then draw a card out from the middle pile.

When you have a set of four shout out and put that pile to the side. Keep playing until there are no cards left in the middle. The winner is the player with the most sets.
