If you are the parent of a toddler going through the ‘terrible twos’, you are no doubt at your wits ends as to how you can get your sweet little darling back!

And while it can be a little frustrating, there are a number of things you can do to deal with their challenging behaviour

Understand why they are like that

It is important to remember that a lot of your toddler’s frustrations stem from their inability to understand their emotions, many of which they are experiencing for the first time.

Label their emotions

Again, a lot of your toddler’s frustrations stem from them not knowing what it is they are feeling, so it is important you give it a name. For instance, when they spill their drink and get annoyed, say something like, “I feel frustrated when I spill something as well, but we can wipe it up together and we’ll feel better in no time” or “when I don’t get my own way I feel angry too, but it is important we don’t throw things or hurt others.”

Show them what they can do

It is common for kids to lash out, throw themselves on the ground or even try to hurt someone when they feel angry, upset or frustrated, but your job is to show them the appropriate way to handle something. Teach them to recognise their feelings by saying "I know you are angry” and then tell them how to manage these feelings by jumping up and down, screaming or breathing in deeply - whatever you feel is the appropriate way for your child to react to certain feelings.

Give them control

As your child grows up they will become more and more independent and will want to exert themselves so much more. There are plenty of ways you can give them control yet keep control yourself. For instance when it comes to clothes give them two or three outfit options and allow them to choose the one they like.
