If your house is anything like ours, dinner time is often like feeding time at the zoo. As you feed every hungry person in the home, there is just one who is a little trickier to feed than others: your toddler!

And when it comes to what you expect to happen and what actually does happen, they are so far from each other it's laughable.

1. Dropping food

Expectation:

They will drop a little mashed potato in the floor.

Reality:

They will throw the whole thing, bowl and all, on the floor - after they have mashed a little in their hair.

2. Will they eat it?

Expectation:

They will try at least one spoonful of your lovely homemade dinner.

Reality:

You mentioned yummy broccoli and now they won’t even look at the spoon – you’re totally wishing you hadn’t said anything now!

3. Independent feeding

Expectation:

Your little one will sit up at the table, spoon in one hand, while you gently have a chat with them about life...

Reality:

You’re considering putting them in their highchair because they seem to have a case of ants-in-their-pants!

4. Your cooking skills

Expectation:

In your chef’s apron, you will puree only organic ingredients in your Pinterest-worthy kitchen.

Reality:

Whatever is in the fridge will do. Seriously.

5. Family fun around the table

Expectation:

You will all eat as a family around the kitchen table and laugh and joke about the day.

Reality:

You will feed your toddler before everyone else because you want to be able to enjoy your own dinner...
