A five-year-old boy from the US was sent home from his first day at Kindergarten because his hair was too long.

The boy, Malachi Wilson, is Native American, so his hair style is keeping with his Seminole religious beliefs. His mum April Wilson explained: “Our hair is sacred to us, it is part of who we are.” But apparently this is a violation of the dress code at F.J. Young Elementary and Malachi was sent back home.

However, the school were quick to reverse their decision when documentation was shown that the little boy was part of the Navajo Nation, though not before ruining what is an exciting day for many children. His mum, April Wilson said:

“Malachi was excited to start school all summer long. After we had enrolled him he was excited, everyday it was the question, 'mom are we going to school?'

“It’s kind of heart breaking because how do you explain to a five-year-old that he is being turned away because of what he believes in, because of his religion, because of what’s part of him, how do you explain that to him?”

We hope Malachi’s second day of school was a lot better than his first.
