Handwriting is a vital learning experience for children and by the age of 7 and 8 children will have begun handwriting lessons in the classroom.

Handwriting expectations

Children of this age, will be able to write many words and should be capable of forming upper and lower letters correctly. Their visual memory will also have developed.

Handwriting grip

One of the most significant skills of this age group is that children will advance to the mature tripod grasp. Children of this age will be taught how exactly to hold a pencil and how to grip it correctly. This will help them to write lines, curves and letters on paper.

Handwriting skills

Children of this age, will begin to learn the direction and also the starting and finishing points for letter formations in the script. It is important that these skills are fostered so that children will learn from the onset the correct way of writing rather than developing poor habits.

Other handwriting milestones include:
  • Your child will be learning how to write with the correct slope, size and shape of letters.
  • Children at this age must learn to consolidate the open index-finger thumb space.
  • If your child is struggling with their handwriting, completing jigsaws, puzzles and building with lego will all help to improve finger dexterity.

Your child at this age will be trying their best to write in a straight line. They should be aware that they need to write from left to write across the page and they will also be attempting to form letters that are all the one size.

At this age, your child will still be developing their visual spatial awareness and they may still place words too close together on a page, encourage your child to place their finger in between each word when writing.
