Your child at this age will become more enthusiastic about handwriting as her skills improve and as they move from printing to joining their writing.

Handwriting goals:

Children of this age develop sufficiently legible and fluent handwriting so that they can focus on the message that they are trying to put across.

Children of this age are also able to use upper case and lower case letters. All letters should be formed correctly at this age.

The mechanics of handwriting

Your child at this age will be focusing on the mechanics of handwriting: This is simply where they are combining the beginning and ending points of letters with the direction that the hand moves in.

Children who are left-handed may encounter some slight problems while learning to join letters as they push as opposed to pull, their hand from left to write. However, this problem is usually surpassed easily and is their writing is just as well written and legible as that written by right handed people.

Children of this age will also be capable of using the correct shape, size and slope of letters. They should also be able to have balanced proportions within the letters themselves.

It’s important that children get lots of opportunities to practice their handwriting as repetition is the key to mastering this skill.
