You asked

How can I encourage my toddler to dress and undress himself?

By the time your toddler is nearly two years old, he or she has probably been undressing for a few months, and may even be able to put on some of his or her own clothes.

Encourage practising dressing and undressing by buying your child easy to put on clothes like sweatshirts, pull on pants and t-shirts, and add an element of fun by giving him or her other fun dress up items, like hats and scarves.

Avoid clothes that have too many difficult to close items like buttons, snaps and zips, and opt for pull on elasticised trousers, shoes with Velcro closure instead of laces and zip fronted cardigans or sweaters.

The better your child gets at dressing, the less you will need to go through the morning battle of dressing, although you may find it difficult to stifle their creativity when it comes to choosing outlandish outfits! Rather choose and lay out the clothes yourself, and let your child have the fun of actually putting them on.
