One of the most important skills your toddler has, in terms of language development, is listening. In fact, while an average 22 month old will have a spoken vocabulary of around 20 words, the number of words they understand is far more than that.
You may even have noticed that your child is starting to put words together in simple two or three word sentences, and that she’s started to mimic your tone and inflection as well as your words. All of those are important signs that your child is listening, and that he or she is picking up the necessary language skills.
Encourage listening and paying attention by playing games. Asking your child to point to his or her nose, hair, foot or another body part is a good way to encourage listening, and at this age, your child should be able to point out five or more. Another way to make listening and learning fun is to sing songs with your child – he or she may not get all the words right, but your child will certainly enjoy trying to sing along!
Reading repetitive, age appropriate stories aloud is another great way to encourage listening and language development.
