As your child grows, they start to become more aware of the importance of recycling, donating to charities and saving energy, as they learn these things in school and notice them on the TV.

While your little one won’t be able to go off travelling the world helping people or building houses just yet, it doesn’t mean they can’t do anything now.

Pick up rubbish
What your child does at home, they are bound to do outside the house, so it is important you teach them to put things in the bin and pick up after themselves. This way they will be less inclined to simply throw rubbish on the ground. Remember, small steps can make a huge impact.

Upcycle
Encourage your son or daughter to upcycle things such as toilet roll tubes, sweet wrappers etc. to reduce waste. They can use these things to make pictures or unusual artwork. Encourage them to use jars to store pens or to make blankets from old clothes.

Charity
Charity definitely starts at home, so encourage your child to gather up toys they no longer use to donate to a local kids’ charity. Bring them along when you drop them off so they will be able to see how their old toys brought a smile to someone else.

Donate
Kids have a natural instinct to want to help other people so encourage them to save up a portion of their pocket money to donate to others. A jar in their room or a special money box just for donations will help your child see how much they have saved. Let them decide who they want the money to go to so they are making the conscious decision of who to help.

Host a charity party
If your youngster really wants to give to a charity, help them to organise a party or sleepover where their friends donate a small amount of money. Sure kids love any excuse to have a party.

Get them to sponsor an animal
There are always advertisements encouraging people to sponsor animals or kids, instead of getting your child to save their allowance in a money jar you could always get them to use the money for a monthly sponsorship.

Starting off small will help your youngster understand that no matter how insignificant something may seem, it will still have a positive impact on the worl.
