Swedish furniture giant IKEA has today issued a product recall on its PATRULL Safety Gates, following complaints of children falling down stairs.

The company published a statement on its website this afternoon, stating that a number of customers got in touch claiming that their children had managed to open the gates, and ended up falling down the stairs. In some cases, the kids required medical attention.

After an external investigation, it emerged that there was a fault with the PATRULL Safety Gates’ ‘unreliable’ locking mechanism.

IKEA has now urged all those who purchased one of the gates to ‘immediately stop using it and bring it back to any IKEA store for a full refund’.

In the statement, IKEA’s Maria Thorn said: “At IKEA, we have a zero tolerance regarding child safety. We want to offer safe products and we believe that children are the most important people in the world. Whenever we are made aware of a possible safety issue with our products, we investigate thoroughly. We cannot accept that there could be a risk of injury while playing and as an immediate and precautionary action we have decided to recall all PATRULL safety gates.”

They also apologised to customers, and urged them to either get in touch with Customer Services by phone or visit their local store’s Returns department to sort out their refund.

SHARE to spread the word to a parent who may be using one of these gates.
