Infant tragically killed in Athlone collision

Gardai are appealing for witnesses to come forward following a road traffic accident which has left a five-month-old baby dead in the midlands.

The incident occurred on the Athlone Bypass this afternoon at approximately 2.15pm.

A three-year-old girl, who was also a passenger in the vehicle at the time of the collision, has suffered injuries which have been described as not life-threatening.

The male driver and front-seat female passenger survived the crash and escaped the vehicle unharmed.

The baby boy was taken to Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe suffering from serious injuries, and was tragically pronounced dead later in hospital.

A forensic examination of the scene is due to be carried out.
