Why children play rough?
Every mum will become exasperated at some stage over her children’s overly boisterous and sometimes rough play. Primary school children, especially boys are the most likely to rough house.
It is believed by experts that play fighting helps children avoid actual fighting as it helps them decide who is stronger and who is weaker.   For instance climbing over one another and rolling over each other helps children to:
  • Understand the limits of how strong they are
  • Discover what other children will and won’t allow them to do
How to distinguish between real and play fighting?
You might be worried that your child is too aggressive but you can usually spot rough-housing from aggressive fighting.
In rough house play, children will be smiling and laughing and will resume normal play afterwards. However, sometimes rough play can turn into real fighting so make sure that you keep a watchful eye.
